It’s one of the most common questions we hear.

“Invisalign is everywhere — why wouldn’t you offer it?”

It’s a fair question, and you deserve a straight answer.

This isn’t a knock on Invisalign. In the right situations, it works. But after years of treating growing kids, we’ve come to believe that the most popular option isn’t always the most complete one — and that distinction matters more than most parents realize.

Straight Teeth and Healthy Development Aren’t the Same Thing

Most parents come to us with a clear goal: they want their child’s teeth straightened. Invisalign was built for exactly that. It’s a well-engineered system that moves teeth into better alignment using a series of clear trays.

For adults with mild issues, that’s often perfectly appropriate.

But children aren’t small adults. They’re still developing — jaws, airways, facial structure — and that changes everything about what good orthodontic care should actually accomplish.

When we evaluate a child, we’re not just looking at whether the teeth are crooked. We’re asking:

  • Are the jaws developing properly?
  • Is there enough room for the teeth — and the tongue?
  • Is this child breathing well?
  • Will today’s treatment hold up ten years from now?

Because in many kids, crowded or misaligned teeth aren’t the real problem. They’re a symptom of something deeper.

The Question Most Orthodontists Don’t Ask

The conventional approach to crowding is straightforward: line up the teeth within the space that exists or remove teeth to create more room. Invisalign works within that same framework — it’s designed to optimize what’s already there.

That works fine when the structure is sound.

But what if the structure itself is the problem?

A narrow palate, an underdeveloped jaw, restricted airway space — these aren’t things you fix by rearranging teeth. You can produce a beautiful smile that way, and still leave the underlying issue completely untouched.

For an adult, that may be an acceptable trade-off. For a child who’s still growing, it’s a missed opportunity.

What We Do Instead

Because children are still developing, we have a window to do something that isn’t available later in life: we can actually change the structure, not just work around it.

Our focus is on:

  • Expanding the jaws when development has fallen behind
  • Creating room for teeth to emerge naturally, without extraction
  • Supporting airway health and breathing patterns
  • Building a foundation that leads to lasting stability — not just short-term alignment

This isn’t “more treatment for its own sake.” It’s treating the cause, not just the visible result.

Where Invisalign Has a Place

To be clear: Invisalign isn’t something we dismiss. For adults, for minor corrections, or as a finishing step after foundational work is done, it can be a useful tool.

What it isn’t designed to do is develop jaw structure, expand a narrow palate in a growing child, or address airway-related concerns. And for our patients, those things matter too much to leave on the table.

The Question Worth Asking Before You Decide Anything

Before choosing an orthodontic path for your child, the most important question isn’t “What’s the easiest way to straighten these teeth?”

It’s: What will give my child the best outcome over the long term?

Those don’t always lead to the same answer.

If your child has crowded teeth, a narrow smile, mouth breathing, snoring, or early alignment issues, there may be more happening than the teeth alone suggest. Addressing it during the growth years can reduce the need for more complex treatment later — and produce results that actually hold.
